Chickweed crochet flower
Chickweed or Chickenwort (Stellaria media) is an annual plant native to Europe. Its name comes from the fact that the plant is often eaten by chickens. The plant is edible and you can also use it for its medicinal purpose. It can be applied with good results to cuts, burns and bruises.
The flowers are small, have 5 white petals, 5 hairy sepals larger than the petals and 3-6 stamens with purple anthers.

Crochet Yarn
- Crochet cotton Size 10 colour A = white,
- Embroidery cotton (6strands) colour B = green.
Crochet Hook
- 1mm steel hook, 1.75 mm steel hook.
Details of components
- small corolla with 5 white 2-lobed petals, 3-6 stamens with purple anthers and a green stigma
- 5 hairy sepals larger than the petals.
Crochet Flower Pattern
Crochet Petals (5pcs.)
The heart-shaped petals are not adjacent, therefore we’re going to make them one by one. The instructions below are for one 2-lobed petal.
Start: using A and 1mm hook, make (5ch, 2sts-dtr cluster, 3ch and sc) in the first ch, (3ch, 2sts-dtr cluster, 5ch and sl st) in the ch at base of petal. Fasten off but do not cut off tails. Make 5 petals.
Crochet Calyx and Sepals
Start: using B and 1.75mm hook, make 3ch, join with sl st, 1ch
R1: 4sc in ring, join with sl st and work in spiral 16sc, 1ch
R2: make 2sc in each of the 4sc = 8sc, join with sl st, 1ch
R3: make (2sc in next sc, 3sc) repeat twice = 10sts, join with sl st, 1ch
R4: (1sl st in next sc, 4ch, 1picot, 4sts-tr cluster as follows: 2 tr in same sc, 2tr in next sc, 3ch and sl st in same sc) x 5 = 5 sepals. Finish off B.
Crochet Stigma
For the stigma we’re going to make a little ball in colour B.
Start: using B and 1.75mm hook, make 3ch, join with sl st, 1ch
R1: 4sc in ring, join with sl st,
R2: make (2sc in next sc, 1sc) x2 = 6sc, join with sl st, 1ch
R3: 6sc, join with sl st, 1ch
R4: (skip 1sc, make 1sc)x3. Fasten off B.
Assembly
Position stigma in the centre of the sepals’ ring. Secure them together.
Position each petal between 2 sepals, pull tails through and secure together.
Cut short pieces of thread colour A and pull them (the stamens) through the stem (see photo). Use a purple marker to colour the tips.

I love the way the sepal looks but I can not seem to follow the pattern. Do you mean to ch 4 then picot and then finish the cluster INTO the rest of the chains in the chain 4?
Hi Jen,
For the sepals, make 4 ch, then a picot (another 3ch this time and sl st back to make the picot). The cluster sts you make them into the sts from previous row – R3, not in the chain of 4ch. You will finish one seal with 3 ch and sl st into last used st from R3. I hope that will help 🙂
