About Calicanthus
The American plant Calicanthus floridus, also known as Allspice or Strawberry shrub is a hardy deciduous shrub with eye-catching, water-lily like flowers. All parts of the plant are aromatic – flowers, leaves, roots and bark.
The shrub grows native from Virginia to Florida. It flowers throughout the summer large, many-petalled blooms red, or brown in colour.

Crochet Yarn
- Embroidery cotton (6strands) colour A= red,
- colour B = green.
Crochet Hook
- 1.75 mm steel hook.
Details of components
- multi-petalled red flowers, similar to a waterlily.
Flower Crochet Pattern
Large Petals
Start: using A and 1.75mm hook
R1: make 12ch, skip 1st 2ch and work in the 3rd ch from hook 1hdc, 4dc, 1hdc, 3sc, 1sl st
Repeat R1 10 times = 10 petals. Continue with the small petals.
Small Petals
R1: make 10ch, skip 1st 2ch and work in the 3rd ch from hook 1hdc, 3dc, 1hdc, 2sc, 1sl st = 1 petal
Repeat R1 6 times = 6 petals. 
Fasten off A leaving a long tail. Roll the petals with the small ones towards the middle, thread a needle and stitch them all at the base.
Stem and Leaf
Start: using colour B and 1.75mm hook make 20ch, skip 1st ch and make 1sl st in each of the 19ch.
Make 14ch, turn, skip 2ch, make 12sc, 1ch to cross the stem, pivot and make 1sc, 2dc, 4tr, 2dc, 1hdc, 1sc, pivot and make 3sc on the tip of leaf and down the other side on the back loops make 1sc, 1hdc, 2dc, 4tr, 2dc, 1sc, sl st in the ch and another sl st in the stem. Fasten off B.
Assembly
Sew flower head half way onto the stem.
