About California Poppy

California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a perennial plant, a native wildflower to the United States and also the official state flower of California since 1903. The plant has blue-green foliage and flowers blooming at the end of long stems. The flowers have 4 broad petals with colours ranging from cream to orange. They close at night or in cold weather, opening again in the morning.

How to Crochet a California Poppy flower?

Crochet Yarn

  • Crochet cotton Size 5 colour A = orange.

Crochet Hook

  • 1.75 mm steel hook.

Details of components

  • 4 petals orange-coloured flower and a bunch of orange stamens.

Crochet Flower Pattern

Start: using A and 1.75mm hook make 4ch, join in ring with sl st, 1ch

R1: 8sc in the ring, join with sl st, 1ch,

R2: 1ch, make dc in the next 2 sts, 2ch, turn

R3: 2sts-dc inc, 2sts-dc inc, 2ch, turnCalifornia Poppy crochet petals

R4: 2sts-dc inc, 2dc, 2sts-dc inc, 2ch, turn

R5: 6dc, 1ch, turn

R6: 1sc, 1hdc, 2dc, 1hdc, 1sc, sl st on the edge of petal back to the ring = 1 petal. Repeat from R2 to R6, 3 times to make 4 petals in total.

Make sc on the edge of the petals (3sc in each corner) and fasten off when finished.

Wind the colour A yarn 5 times around the tip of the little finger. Pull the loops off and tie them together. Pull the bunch through the centre of the flower and sew at the back. Cut the loops open.

      Hi Susan,

      I think it works according to the settings I’ve chosen.

      You click on the Pinterest button and you get to choose which of the pictures you’d like to pin and then continue with Pining it. 

      Would you rather prefer me to choose the picture for you? Is this how you think it should work?

    You did a fabulous job!! I love them and plant them every year ( once established there is no getting rid of them.) And yes they do grow all over California!

    I made this tonight and I love it! However, I am a lefty and had to redo the pattern a little so that each petal ended on the correct side.
