About Sweet William

Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) is a perennial plant native to mountain regions in Europe, also present in China and Korea. Growing to a height of 35-75cm, the plant has blue-green narrow leaves and dense clusters of flowers. The flowers are small 2-3cm in diameter, have 5 serrated petals and colours ranging from white, pink to red and purple and variegated patterns.

How to Crochet a Sweet William  flower?

Crochet Yarn

  • Crochet cotton Size 10 colour A = white,
  • Embroidery cotton (6strands) colour B = burgundy.

Crochet Hook

  • 1mm steel hook, 1.75 mm steel hook.

Details of components

  • 5 petals white flower with a burgundy centre and serrated edge.

Crochet Flower Pattern

Crochet CorollaSweet William crochet petal

Start: using A and 1.75mm hook make 4ch, join in ring with sl st, 1ch

R1: 5sc in the ring, join with sl st, change to colour B, 2ch

R2: 10dc, join with sl st, change to colour A, 2ch

R3: (3dc in next dc) x 2, 1ch, turn

R4: 6sc, turnSweet William crochet corolla

R5: (3ch, skip 1st ch, 1sl st, 1sc, sl st in next sc)x5, sl st on the edge of petal to get back to colour B. Repeat from R3 to R5 4 more times to get 5 petals in total. Join with 1st petals and fasten off A.

StigmaSweet William crochet stigma

Start: using colour A and 1mm hook, make 8ch, skip 1st ch, make 4sl st, make 5ch, skip 1st ch, make 4sl st, continue with 3sc. Fasten off A. Pull the stigma through the petals’ ring and sew at the back.
