About the Silk Floss Tree

The Silk Floss Tree (Ceiba speciosa) is a decideous tree native to tropical and sub-tropical forests of South America. Related to the baobab and the kapok, this tree can grow up to 25 m tall. The trunk has a bottle shape and it's prickled all over. The flowers have 5 long and narrow petals, with a dark eye, cream in the middle and pink towards the ends.

How to Crochet a Silk Floss Tree Flower?

Crochet Yarn

  • Crochet cotton Size 5 colour A = multi pink/burgundy
  • Embroidery cotton (6strands) colour B = yellow/pink melange using 3 strands of yellow and 3 strands pink, colour C = pink.

Crochet Hook

  • 1.75 mm steel hook.

Details of components

  • flower with 5 narrow, long petals
  • dark eye, then cream with darker spots ad finish with pink towards the ends.

Start: using colour A, make 5ch, join with sl st, 2ch, working in round

R1: make 10dc, join with sl st, change to colour B, *2ch

R1: make 2dc in next 2 sts, 2ch, turn

R2: 4dc, 2ch, turn

R3: same

R4: 4dc, change to colour C, 2ch, turnSilk Floss Tree crochet petal

R5: make 2dc in next st, 3dc = 5dc, 2ch, turn

R6: make 2dc in next st, 4dc = 6dc, 2ch, turn

R7: 6dc, 2ch, turnSilk Floss Tree crochet corolla

R8: 3sts-dc dec x 2, fasten off. Tie in colour B at the base of petal in the ring * and repeat from * to * 4 more times = 5 petals.

Crochet StigmaSilk Floss Tree crochet stigma

Start: using colour A make 3ch, join with sl st, 1ch

R1: make 6sc in the ring, join with sl st, 1ch

R2: same

R3: reduce to 3sc and continue in spiral until stgma measures 2 inches. Attach the thinner end of stigma to the centre of the flower.
