About Okra

Okra, also known as lady’s fingers is an annual or perennial plant related to species such as cocoa, cotton and hibiscus. It is best known for its pods, and it is quite a popular healthy food being high in antioxidants, a rich source of Calcium and Potassium, vitamin C and fibre.

The flowers are large, 4-8cm in diameter, have 5 light yellow petals and with a dot of burgundy at the base.

How to Crochet an Okra Flower?

Crochet Yarn

  • Embroidery cotton (6strands) colour A = light yellow, colour B = burgundy.

Crochet Hook

  • 1.75 mm steel hook.

Details of components

  • large flowers with 5 white-yellow petals with a burgundy dot at the base
  • tall stigma.

Start: using B make 2ch, skip 1st ch and make 4sc in the 2nd ch, join with sl st, 1ch

R1: 1sc in next sc, 2sc in next sc) x 2 = 6sc, join with sl st, change to colour A, fasten off B

R2: 6sc, join with sl st, 1chOkra crochet stigma

R3: skip 1st sc, 5sc, join with sl st, 1ch

R4: 5sc, join with sl st, 1ch, turn

R5: make 2sc in each sc = 10sc, join with sl st, change to colour B, 1ch

R6: make (1sc in next sc, 2dc in next sc) x 5 = 15sc, join with sl st, change to colour A, fasten off B.

R1: (make 5ch, skip next 2sts, 1 sl st in the sc) x 5, join with sl st, 2ch

R2: 1 petal: 8dc, 2ch, turn

R3: inc 1dc, 6dc, inc 1dc = 10dc, 2ch, turn

R4: inc 1dc, 8dc, inc 1dc = 12dc, 2ch, turn

R5: 12dc, 2ch, turn

R6: sameOkra crochet petal

R7: 3sts-dc dec, 6dc, 3sts-dc dec, 2ch

R8: 3sts-dc dec, 2dc, 3sts-dc dec. Make sl st going down on the edge of petal until the ch chain. Repeat from R2 to R8 to make 4 more petals. Fasten off A.

  1. Hi, I have been looking for a Hibiscus crochet pattern for a very long time now! I know that is not what you call this flower, but it has 5 huge petals, just like the hibiscus flowers!I think this pattern will work perfectly for me! Now if I can just find the time to make one!
